I was taken to live in the Navvy Houses with my mum and dad when I was about 7 years old. There were several terraced streets comprising of Great Street, Northern street, Railway Street and Oakley Street, they were built to accommodate the construction workers of the Great Northern Railway in the 1870s.
My first memories of the house were the small kitchen, the living room, two bedrooms and what I thought was an enormous attic with a window giving a good view over the quarry towards Mountain. I then saw the very scary cellar, little did I know that later it was to become a friend. This was in fact a small back to back terrace house with no piped hot water.
